CYA Flag Football Information

Registration is Open!

Flag Football is played in the spring, normally from the beginning of April through the middle of June, and is a less vigorous sport than tackle football, with only one or two practices a week and games on Sundays.

Flag football is open to both boys and girls of all abilities and is non-contact.  We especially recommend Flag football for the child who has never played previously played football or any other organized sport, or for the child who loves football but is afraid of the contact that is associated with tackle football.

Flag football is also great for the traditional tackle football player who is looking to improve core skills, such as speed, agility, pattern running, throwing skills, ball control, and catching skills.

Another benefit of flag football is that it also allows kids to play other traditional spring sports since they primarily play on Saturdays.

FLAG FOOTBALL AGE GUIDELINES

Ages 5 – 15 based on a participant's age on December 31st of the previous year.

(for instance, 2024 eligibility is based on a participant’s age on December 31, 2023).

There are no weight restrictions for flag football.

FLAG FOOTBALL AGE GROUPS

Our league is made up of the following age groups:

6U (Age 5-6)   8U (Age 7-8)   10U (Age 9-10)   12U (Age 11-12) 15U (Ages 13-15)

***We do permit girls at the bottom of an age group to play down one division.  For instance, if a girl is 11, they will be allowed to play in the 10U age group.  This is a great option for first-year flag football players.

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS

We do everything possible to split teams as evenly as possible, but it is not always possible to predict a team's potential talent on the field.  If we have enough teams participating in the 10U, 12U, and 15U divisions, we will divide the division into two skill divisions and allow coaches with more experienced teams a chance to play against teams of similar ability.

SPECIAL REQUEST

We do accept special requests during flag football registration, but we cannot guarantee we will honor a request.  An example of a special request would be a request for a coach, team placement because of a transportation problem, or to be moved up to another age group.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO PLAY FLAG FOOTBALL?

To play flag football, each participant is required to provide the following items:

Colored mouth guards.

Pair of athletic cleats.  These cannot have metal cleats, like baseball cleats.

Black Athletic shorts with no pockets – for games.

The CYA will provide:

One colored mouth guard per season, game jersey, and flags.

WHERE DOES THE CYA PRACTICE FOR FLAG FOOTBALL?

All CYA Flag Football teams will practice at Rocky Run Middle School (Subject to change)

A team may practice as many as 3 times per week before the regular season begins, but coaches may not practice more than two times per week once games begin.

Practices are held on weekday evenings from 6 to 8 pm.   No practices are permitted on the weekend unless there is a special circumstance that must be approved by the league commissioner.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE FLAG FOOTBALL GAMES PLAYED?

Our spring Flag Football League participates with other flag football leagues from Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, and therefore, games will be played on Sundays at nearby fields located in both counties.

All games will be played on Sundays, there will be Saturday games at the end of the season and if we need to make up games.

We play using modified NFL Flag Football rules.  These rules were modified to meet our specific needs and to also provide a more realistic football experience.

All of our games are officiated by a professional official’s organization.
